I’m confused by all these people carrying on about “praying”… “pray for it to weaken” .. “pray for those in the New Orleans area” .. “God bless these people”.
Um, are you praying to the same God who assumedly created this storm in the first place?
If memory serves me correctly, the casinos in and around New Orleans generate more revenue for the state than the income tax does. Beyond just being a fascinating economic statistic, this is especially relevant tonight as the casinos are in grave physical danger at the moment. None of them are built to withstand a storm like this.
“Estimates have been made of tens of thousands of deaths from flooding that could overrun the levees and turn New Orleans into a 30-foot-deep toxic lake filled with chemicals and petroleum from refineries, and waste from ruined septic systems.” - AP
I remember a couple of years ago reading an article about New Orleans ongoing water problem - essentially, New Orleans has flooding issues even in the best of times - but it looks like Katrina is really going to put it to the test.
The US is expected to pull significant numbers of troops out of Iraq in the next 12 months in spite of the continuing violence, according to the general responsible for near-term planning in the country.
Canon really seems to be jumping ahead of Nikon. I really want to upgrade from my D70 - medium format is tempting but, as Peter Rojas points out on Engadget, medium format cameras still feel like you’re buying a car, not a camera.
Nikon needs to offer more options for the semi-pro photog. The D2X is an excellent camera but still around $5000. The rumored D200 is nowhere to be seen yet. With Canon promising several 8-to-12MP cameras in the next quarter or so, it’s a touch disheartening to a guy with a lot of Nikon glass who is looking for a reasonable upgrade path.
There’s also some interesting discussion over at photographyblog.com about the apparent slowdown of Nikon in the marketplace.
JP Morgan Chase is blaming this embarassing problem on an outside list vendor. Mr. Habbas has every right to be pissed. But I also am feeling some sympathy for Carter Franke.
A lot of you have IM’d me, e-mailed me, and a few brave souls have left comments here about issues you’ve had with Herb Chambers. For those of you who don’t know the history, I’d gone through a series of issues with Herb Chambers a while back with my Infiniti. After getting a very unacceptable con job from their service department, I was subsequently ignored, passed around, bullshat, blown off, lied to, then ultimately made fun of by the staff there.
